In “A Temporary Matter”, the difference in how Shoba and
Shukumar handled their grief was interesting. To me, Shukumar handled his grief
better than Shoba. Though he would isolate himself, Shukumar seems to have
accepted their son’s death and is able to sit in what was the nursery. On the
other hand, Shoba immerses herself in work. As she never talked about the death,
I don’t think Shoba has gotten closure and I don’t think she is able to move
on. So while Shukumar deals with his grief through isolation, Shoba deals with
hers by avoiding the issue and focusing solely on work.
Here's an article from the American Psychological Association on dealing with grief.
