Shukumar has an interesting love for his wife in “A Temporary
Matter.” Throughout the story, Shukumar comments on Shoba’s mannerisms, knowing
and noticing the tiniest details. He claims to know what facial expressions she
would be having while they talked in the dark and other such mannerisms. Yet he
moved his desk into the former nursery because Shoba avoids that room. He said
he wouldn’t tell Shoba the gender of their baby because he loved her but in the
end does. Though they have grown apart, I believe that Shukumar has never
stopped loving his wife, he just misses the woman she used to be.
