“You didn’t have to tell me why you did it.” This was one
line that really caught my attention in “A Temporary Matter.” When playing
their confession game, Shukumar explains to Shoba why he cheated on an exam
during college. Shukumar explaining why he did what he did holds a special
significance because Shoba never explains her confessions. Shoba’s entire
reason for starting the game was to tell Shukumar that she was moving out, but
even when she tells him she doesn’t really explain why she’s doing it. By
telling her a real explanation, Shukumar gives her a courtesy she didn’t plan to
give him.
