While reading “Sexy,” I was curious about the goddess Kali
and did a bit of research. One of the things that the goddess Kali is often
associated with is sexuality. Considering Miranda later in her life becomes a
mistress, a very sexual activity, I thought it was interesting that Lahiri
mentioned this goddess in particular. Throughout the story, Miranda is not afraid
of what she and Dev are doing, she likes being recognized by an attractive man
and so feels empowered. The goddess Kali is often also seen as a symbol of
female empowerment, which could be another reason that Lahiri specifically
picked the goddess Kali.
Here's a page I found with some basic information on the goddess Kali. I thought this was interesting and kept things simple enough for someone who doesn't know a lot of that mythology and religion.
