One interesting thing to me in “Interpreter of Maladies” was
how different people viewed Mr. Kapasi’s job as a medical interpreter. Mr.
Kapasi himself views the job as a “thankless occupation” that is more tedious
than it is rewarding and his wife would agree. However, Mrs. Das sees Mr.
Kapasi as holding a sort of power, something he hadn’t considered before. Mrs.
Das opens his eyes up to just how important his job is, that his
interpretations are what leads to the correct diagnosis and treatment for the
patients. Though a small part, I liked how this shows how people can have
completely different perspectives on the same thing.
