“Uneven banks of snow still lined the sidewalks, though it
was warm enough for people to walk about without hats or gloves” (pg. 5). This
description leads me to believe that “A Temporary Matter” is set when winter is
turning to spring. I believe that Lahiri might be using the season as a symbol
of Shoba and Shukumar’s relationship. When the story begins, there is not a lot
of warmth between the couple; they don’t really interact with each other. But
as the power is turned off and they start interacting, they begin to warm up to
each other. They are in a transition phase, just like the season outside.
Here is a link to a Prezi presentation on Thomas C. Foster's How To Read Literature Like a Professor, Chapter 20: So Does Season. Though a brief summary of what is covered in the chapter, having read it, I feel this prezi highlights the main points.
