One interesting aspect of “A Temporary Matter” is Shoba’s
treatment of her house. Upon entering the house, Shoba pries her shoes off and
carelessly leaves them and her bag on the floor. Shoba is described as a tidy
person, so just leaving her things laying around is not the behavior you would
expect of such a person in their own home. When reflecting, Shukumar states
that “[Shoba] treated the house as if it were a hotel.” Hotels are not
permanent, they are a temporary place to stay. By treating her own home with
such disregard, Shoba indicates that her stay there is only temporary.
