Something that caught my attention during “Interpreter of
Maladies” was how easily Mr. Kapasi constructed a future with him and Mrs. Das.
Everything was planned out, even down to the timing for the letters. It’s
interesting that we can be so unhappy in our lives that we construct a life we
believe will be better with a complete stranger. Mr. Kapasi’s fantasy for
himself and Mrs. Das carries throughout the story, only to end with his address
floating out of her handbag, crushing his dream. That we would so much rather
accept a fantasy than live our reality was an interesting idea that I found in
this story.
