In “A Temporary Matter” Shoba and Shukumar knew their
stillborn baby in different ways. Shoba knew their baby in his life, when he
was in her womb, something that only she can say. Shukumar knew their baby in
his death, he was the one to hold him and know the gender. These are very
different ways of knowing the same baby and I think significant in why they
drifted apart. Constantly, Shukumar is reminded that he wasn’t at the birth,
and so Shoba believes Shukumar didn’t bond with him. But while Shoba bonded
with him in life, Shukumar bonded with him in death, and they both knew him
differently.
