Early on in “Interpreter of Maladies” I noticed that there
seemed to be little respect for the host culture among the Das family. When
they first meet Mr. Kapasi, he bows to them but Mr. Das insists on a strong
handshake. On their way to the Sun Temple, Mr. Das has the cab stopped to take
a picture of a local man walking past. While I can understand being interested
in a new culture, I’m a bit shocked that they so quickly disrespect it. Going
to another country, especially if you are touring around, means adhering to the
host culture, something that the Das family apparently hasn’t learned yet.
