In “Sexy,” there was one line that caught my attention. When
Miranda is at the Indian grocery store, one of the employees tells her that a
food is “too spicy for you.” I believe this line is very important because it works
as a metaphor to show that no matter how hard Miranda tries to immerse herself
in Indian culture (Dev’s culture), it is not her culture. She has been deemed
unable to handle the particular food, that even if she wanted to, she can’t. No
matter how hard Miranda tries to integrate herself into Dev’s culture, she won’t
be able to because it is not her culture.
