Another thing that really stood out to me in “A Temporary
Matter” was Shoba’s prepared nature. It seemed that she was prepared for any
situation, from extra toothbrushes to carefully labeled jars of spices. What
makes this significant is Shukumar acknowledging Shoba’s prepared nature,
highlighting how much she has changed. Shukumar couldn’t find candles when the
power turned off, something that most prepared people would have since power
outages aren’t uncommon. Shoba’s lack of preparedness for such a common problem
illustrates that she isn’t who she used to be. Their son’s death has hit her
hard and she has lost part of herself in her grief.
