A Temporary Matter: the Significance of Shoba's Prepared Nature

Another thing that really stood out to me in “A Temporary Matter” was Shoba’s prepared nature. It seemed that she was prepared for any situation, from extra toothbrushes to carefully labeled jars of spices. What makes this significant is Shukumar acknowledging Shoba’s prepared nature, highlighting how much she has changed. Shukumar couldn’t find candles when the power turned off, something that most prepared people would have since power outages aren’t uncommon. Shoba’s lack of preparedness for such a common problem illustrates that she isn’t who she used to be. Their son’s death has hit her hard and she has lost part of herself in her grief.
