In “Interpreter of Maladies” Mrs. Das’ breakthrough moment
comes after her confrontation with Mr. Kapasi. When he mentioned that she wasn’t
sick, just guilty, she stormed off in a huff. This led her to her family and to
seeing Bobby terrorized by the monkeys. When her son is free of the monkeys,
Mrs. Das finally takes on a motherly role and tries to tend to Bobby. Finally
this woman shows some interest in her family! If it wasn’t for her talk with
Mr. Kapasi, I don’t believe that Mrs. Das would have acknowledged her part in
the strained family and would not have accepted her duty as a mother.
